Lisa Mercado Fernandez ’83

Lisa Mercado Fernandez ’83 writes novels about life and faith, love and loss. "It is so important to me to write characters that are real and strong yet not afraid to show their weaknesses or human side," said Fernandez. With two novels published and one being prepared for release, Fernandez is sharing a passion she has had since high school when she wrote scripts and had friends act them out.

"It wasn't until I was a freshman at SCA that I realized how much I loved writing," she said. "Ms. Margaret O'Farrell's creative writing class changed my life. Ms. O'Farrell was truly the teacher who we respected, admired and tried to emulate. She was the 'Captain O Captain' of us all in that classroom and we were the awkward and very much alive society of young women who needed a way to express ourselves. She taught us how to, through writing. I actually thanked her in my first book for being such an incredible influence." A teacher for much of her career, Fernandez never stopped writing. In recent years, she took time away from the classroom to care for her ailing mother and used that time to focus on writing. The result: her novels.

Fernandez attended Baruch College and earned her degree at Lehman College. She dedicated her teaching career to students in Catholic schools. She began in the Bronx at Holy Cross School and then taught at several schools in Pennsylvania when she moved to Bucks County. To learn more about Lisa, please visit www.lisamercadofernandez.com.
