Angelina P. '21: Poem presented at graduation

I once saw this bird. It sat alone in the grass,
Occasionally a group of birds would come by.
They all looked content. They stayed for awhile
Wings spread apart, then they flew away.

I saw all of this in one day, And it was all so beautiful.
It seems a bit trifling, too pretentious really.
But my mind began to wander and those
Mental gears started to turn.

It morphed, wonderfully, into this mirage. 4 things: a lone bird, a group, contentment, flight.
We start our journey, with only ourselves and our thoughts.
Our ambition, passion, and dreams, tucked firmly inside.
We start from the bottom, and crane our necks to look up.
We stand alone, but not in loneliness.
We stand at the beginning of a long winding path.
The path is merely a shadow.
But it is our guide, our destination at the end.

The journey is underway, moments shift into each other.
All the internal values are making their appearance.
We find our support, we find our people.
We find ourselves immersed in community, in a beautiful Unity with each other.
We find comfort, we find laughter, we make memories.

The journey is not yet complete, but still pushes on.
Our souls take root in the values we have planted.
The adrenaline rush is in full force, grasping our dreams.
We may have grown weary, we may have had doubt.
But we learned the value of support, the value of community,
The value of faith, and the value of sisterhood.

There is no greater satisfaction than completeness.
This is the great destination that we have longed to see.
But there is a larger cosmic force: continuity.
The lessons learned have been ingrained.
The values learned have been deeply rooted.
Transformation occurs, blissfully, beautifully, unconsciously.
We must embrace ourselves.
Looking ahead is not often easy.
Knowing the shadows behind will never conquer the light ahead.
May success be your lantern, and hope be your guide on the great climb ahead.
May pride fill your heart, and humility be your ship.
Dreams in our minds and passion in our heart.
Let us all take flight.
